Your Next Buy: Sweet Wood and Ceramic Assemblages

A Providence artist makes headboards and other wall sculptures out of reclaimed materials and hand-built ceramics.

While I was browsing the Fine Furnishings Show's vendor list (read more about the Pawtucket event and how to get cheap tickets here), I felt the "I want!" pang at first sight of Providence artist Laura White Carpenter's cool wood and ceramic wall sculptures.

The artist, who shows at various galleries around the state, hand-builds colorful porcelain ceramic pieces some are reminiscent of barnacles, others take the form of mushrooms and forest flora and affixes them to driftwood or reclaimed building materials. Laura stalks salvage yards for antique doors that, once embellished with her porcelain mini-sculptures, transform into dreamy headboards, too. Some of the doors date from the 1700s and maintain their original hardware.
