A generation after our first issue hit newsstands, we’re hitting the big 2-0. To celebrate, we’ve followed up on what’s happened to the good, the bad and the best in our fair state. Where are they now? Here’s what we’ve discovered…

Rhode Island in 1988: Ed DiPrete was governor, the Dow hovered at 2100, the average house sold for $130,000, and Rhode Island Monthly ushered in its first issue in May. In ninety-six mostly black and white pages, we explored the battle to be number one in local TV news, the state’s hottest neighborhoods, and our obsession with license plates (some things don’t change). A generation later, Rhode Island Monthly is hitting a milestone birthday, the big 2-0, and to celebrate, we’ve put together this special twentieth-anniversary feature. We’ve updated some of the highlights, lowlifes and just plain weird goings-on we reported on during two decades and followed up on what’s happened to the carnival of personalities who inhabit our fair state.
