Volvo Ocean Race is Sailing in to Newport
Join Sail Newport for a pre-party celebration to prepare for the arrival of the world's greatest sailors.
The boats keep getting closer. The Volvo Ocean Race is once again coming to Newport and Sail Newport is looking for sailing enthusiasts across the state to come help prepare Newport for the arrival of the world’s greatest and toughest sailors.
On April 8, exactly a month before the sailors are set to land in Newport, Sail Newport is hosting a pep rally at Fort Adams State Park. Prior to the celebration, Clean Ocean Access will be holding a beach cleanup from noon to 2 p.m. in order to tidy up the shore and prevent litter from entering the field of play. They are looking for any volunteers and will provide those who help out with a cup – bring your own reusable one to prevent creating trash – of hot coffee from Empire Tea and Coffee.
Following the cleanup, everyone is invited to partake in the pep rally on Parade Field. On the field, there will be a number of activities for all ages to participate in including giant Jenga, corn hole and face painting. The adults can enjoy the Heineken Beer Garden while being updated on race status and watching highlight videos. McGraths Clambakes and the Fork in the Road Food Truck from Blackstone Catering will be providing the eats of the day.
And if that’s not enough fun for you, be a spectator of some of the toughest athletes on land in a rugby matchup between the Newport and Providence clubs as they battle for Rhode Island Cup. The countdown to the race is on!
