Tossing Frisbees and Burning the Midnight Oil

Can't sleep? Why not try a sport.

Admittedly, I pulled into my driveway at 2:17 this morning, not the wisest move when heading to the office less than seven hours later. Nevertheless, I had a night unlike any other. But before you jump to conclusions, I wasn’t on a midweek barhop or at an underground rave getting a head start to New Year’s. Instead, I was at the Teamworks indoor sports facility in Warwick for a little more than two hours of ultimate Frisbee, trading in beer for the artificial turf equivalent of rug burn.

How did I get there? At the beginning of the week a friend of mine asked if I’d be interested in a midnight game of ultimate Frisbee, a sport in which teammates must reach a football-like end zone to score points by passing the Frisbee to each other while avoiding the defense. I’ve played the sport many times before, but never at midnight. Certainly the lingering fact that I was working this morning was a deterrent but how often do you really get the chance to play a team sport at midnight? Not often enough in my case.

The idea of running around at an hour when most people are getting to sleep still seemed strange on the car ride over, but any apprehension I had was gone once we started playing. I entered with a competitive mindset and nothing but the game mattered. The mini-conversation in my head went like this: “So what if it’s late and you have to be up early. Big whoop. It’s time to man up and play.”

After sprinting more in one night than the entire year combined, I scored somewhere around ten points, working up quite the late-night sweat as I channeled my inner Wes Welker. The night’s best highlights? Making the sliding catch that resulted in my turf-induced rug burn. And that someone told me I was fast. (I’m more proud about the latter.)

Whether you’re really into playing sports or just looking for some rec time, even if it’s not necessarily at midnight, Teamworks is worth checking out. They offer adult leagues for ten different sports including flag football, basketball and dodgeball. (Remember, “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.”) To play sports without their own organized leagues, like ultimate Frisbee, the four different turf and court arenas are available for rent.
