Syd Straw @ Greenwich Odeum
Nov 15 @ 8:00 pm
Syd Straw @ Greenwich Odeum | East Greenwich | Rhode Island | United States

Syd Straw is an actress/producer/singer/songwriter who’s worked with nearly everyone, including Emmylou Harris, Rickie Lee Jones, Wilco, Golden Palominos, and Los Lobos. She tries to love everyone, especially dogs. New band: Bitchface.

Straw is an enormously gifted vocalist and songwriter who has her own distinct musical vision. She first made a name for herself as part of the Golden Palominos, a band led by Anton Fier that enjoyed a cult following in the 1980s. Her Capricorn Records debut, War and Peace, was released in 1996, and since then, her unique blend of folk-rock and blues-rock has found a home with Triple A (adult album alternative) radio stations and their audiences around the country. Straw released Surprise in 1990 to good reviews. That recording chronicled Straw’s emergence as a songwriter; she had thought of herself primarily as a song interpreter before that. On Surprise, Straw was joined by Michael Stipe (R.E.M.), John Doe (X), Ry Cooder, Daniel Lanois, Don Was, Richard Thompson, and Marshall Crenshaw.

The Flying Karamazov Brothers @ Greenwich Odeum
Nov 17 @ 2:00 pm
The Flying Karamazov Brothers @ Greenwich Odeum | East Greenwich | Rhode Island | United States

The Flying Karamazov Brothers are a continuing experiment in comedy, theatre, music and, of course, juggling group. From the beginning, it has been their intention to blend the worlds of performance art, improvisation, word play, harmony, emotion and above all virtuosity into a unique form of theatre and entertainment.

And they mean to entertain. Taking their cue from Shakespeare, they bring art and accessible entertainment to the stage. Comedy is their bread and butter and they layer it on so that children of two or ninety-two will laugh at the same moment for very different reasons.

Each of the Brothers brings his area of expertise to their enterprise. Mark Ettinger (Alexei) is our resident musician, composer and conductor. Rod Kimball (Pavel) is the master juggler. Paul Magid (Dmitri) is the writer, director, and founder. Stephen Bent (Zossima) is exceptionally tall and adorable.

The Flying Karamazov Brothers play at the edge of their ability but to a purpose. Their main contention is that errors make them human but by working together they approach the divine. For them juggling is dropping.

They continue to grow and learn. Their intention is expand the horizons of comedy and entertainment.

Dar Williams @ Greenwich Odeum
Nov 21 @ 8:00 pm
Dar Williams @ Greenwich Odeum | East Greenwich | Rhode Island | United States

Dar Williams has been called “one of America’s very best singer-songwriters” by The New Yorker. She’s released ten studio albums and authored four books including her latest, “What I Found In A Thousand Towns,” to be released in September.

Known as much for her staunch progressive ideals as her raw acoustic energy, Williams has been captivating audiences with her sheer elegance and honesty in her folk-pop songwriting since the ’90s. Williams’ growth as an individual over her two-decade-long career has gone hand-in-hand with her evolution as an artist, touring along the way with such distinguished peers as Joan Baez, Patty Griffin, Ani DiFranco, Loudon Wainwright III and Shawn Colvin among others.

Dar’s most recent album, Emerald, “deals as bluntly as ever with the shadowy, subtle corners of humanity” according to Rolling Stone, and was recorded with friends such as Richard Thompson, Jill Sobule, Jim Lauderdale, the Milk Carton Kids, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Suzzy Roche, the Hooters and others in various studios across the U.S. It is a sparkling collection of new original material, inspired collaborations and some surprising covers such as B.A.D.’s “Johnny Appleseed” making this album one of her best yet.

Adam Ezra Group @ Greenwich Odeum
Nov 23 @ 8:00 pm
Adam Ezra Group @ Greenwich Odeum | East Greenwich | Rhode Island | United States

It’s difficult to impart the roots-steeped, road-trippin’ essence of the Adam Ezra Group into a single word, but frontman Adam Ezra nonetheless keeps one in mind as something of a mantra: community.

Community is epitomized by a belief that has long doubled as a mission statement for the group: namely, that making music together is itself a form of grassroots organizing, capable of nothing less than changing the world.

For their most recent release, Hurricane Wind (2017), the AEG fanbase turned the full power of its collective hurricane wind outward, and shared the music for free with over 5000 people over the course of two weeks. Such a groundswell of activity wouldn’t have been possible even a few years ago; “Hurricane Wind,” to AEG, represents both a celebration and reaffirmation of how remarkably that community has grown.

A tireless touring outfit, the Adam Ezra Group (AEG) is constantly on the road, often devoting their time to local charities and always going out of their way to connect with fans. They are creating a powerful, inclusive community around AEG shows that is beginning to be compared to a social-movement as much as a traditional music fan-base.
