Then craft paper lace and decorate doilies. On July 19, read “Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers’ Strike of 1909” and learn about manufacturing and labor. Then try your hand at paper weaving. On August 16, read “Iggy Peck, Architect” and imagine beautiful buildings. Then design and make your own cardboard house.

Wingate book club to discuss ‘The Assistant’ @ Wingate Residences on the East Side

The book club at Wingate Residences on the East Side will discuss Bernard Malamud’s “The Assistant” on Monday, August 27 at 2 p.m. Originally published in 1957, “The Assistant” tells the story of immigrant Morris Bober who is trying to better life for himself and his family in post-war Brooklyn, New York.

The Wingate book club launched ten years ago and remains one of the community’s most popular programs. Since its inception, the club has read more than 120 books. The book club typically meets the fourth Monday of each month, excluding holidays, and is free and open to the public. Space is limited. For more information or to RSVP, call 401-275-0682.
