Thanks Anyway, Maya Lin

Yesterday’s news about the South Carolina Spoleto Festival poster that oddly features a map of Rhode Island (created pro-bono by artist/architect Maya Lin, who designed the Vietnam Wall in DC) sent me straight to the Charleston newspapers to see what South Carolinians thought of our little state’s starring role on their annual arts festival promotional materials (everything from t-shirts to stateweide signage). The reviews are in:

"Stupid, mediocre and pointless."
"A terrible waste of Lin’s talent…"
"Horrible!"
"horrendous"
"craptastic"
"Maybe they should think about paying the artist next year…"

There’s no fancy explanation for the design. Lin has used map imagery quite a bit in her recent "systemic landscapes." The Spoleto festival poster simply features an atlas map of S.C. (Rhode Island just happens to fall on the opposite page in the atlas.)

I kind of like it.
