You may have heard of the Ice Bucket Challenge but have you heard about the Great American Pie Fight? The Dorrance Kitchen and Cocktails in Providence is raising awareness for ALS with a fundraiser on Saturday, April 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. that doubles as a pie fight to benefit the ALS chapter of Rhode Island.

ALS is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, which is an incurable disease that progresses and “can eventually take away the ability to walk, dress, write, speak, swallow and breathe.”

May is ALS Awareness Month, and since the Dorrance family has been impacted by the illness, they thought it would be a great opportunity to host a fundraiser.

The event will include a live red carpet experience by TEN31 Productions, as well as live music and entertainment by Glamorama, the Extra-Ordinary Rendition Band and DJ Uncle Thirsty. There will be hors d’oeuvres, an open bar featuring Narragansett Beer, a Louis Roederer Brut Premier Champagne toast, signature Dorrance ALS cocktails, a photo booth with a live pie challenge, an event gift bag and two pies will be given to each guest for face-planting or lobbing. Proceeds from the event will benefit the ALS chapter of Rhode Island to raise awareness and fund research and development. VIP Tickets for The Great American Pie Fight Event are $125 each and can be purchased online or at the Dorrance.

The Dorrance has also started a social media campaign for the #ALSPieChallenge. Similar to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the #ALSPieChallenge is asking participants to take a pie in the face to help wipe out ALS. In their video, participants are asked to call out three friends who will accept the challenge and/or donate to their local chapters.

“The #ALSPieChallenge will be the new ice bucket challenge”, says Jean Lester, co-owner of the Dorrance.
