It’s time to plan your outfits and buy your tickets for StyleWeek Northeast’s fourteenth season at the Rhode Island Convention Center. The four nights of fashion are happening February 21 to 24 and tickets are now on sale. The runway will feature autumn and winter 2018 collections, so anticipate lots of comfy and chic looks for this fall and winter’s chilly weather.

This season brings designers from around the world to Providence, including Dominican Republic-based Carols De Moya and London’s Lloyd James Husband, who are showing at StyleWeek for the first time. Other notable designers include New York-based Bridgett Artise, Providence-based Jamall Osterholm, Boston’s Tallulah & Poppy and San Francisco’s Alexander Michael Snyder.

StyleWeek switches it up each season with new designers (and veteran ones, too) to introduce the Northeast region to incredible talent in the international and local fashion scenes. “We are proud to welcome the return of some of our favorite designers as well as an impressive group of new designers from around the country and the world, which demonstrates the need for our platform in the design community,” says StyleWeek’s founder and CEO Rosanna Ortiz.

This year’s SEED Student Design Challenge is also taking a new spin on the innovative fashion event. StyleWeek is teaming up with the Lincoln School and naming it SEEDlings: Innovation Meets Education Student Competition. It’s happening on StyleWeek’s opening night on Feb. 21, when the creations of three local students from the Lincoln School will be presented on the runway, and judged and critiqued by a group of industry experts.

The students include Lincoln School twelfth-grader Willa Summers, Maeve McEnroe, grade eleven, and ninth-grader Brigitte Lynch-Johnson. The students will each create one garment from recycled materials and present their designs on the runway while a video will be shown to explain each participant’s inspiration, concept and technique. With this design challenge, StyleWeek is teaming up with young, aspiring designers before they reach the college level. “Broadening the awareness to incorporate high school students was a natural progression,” says Ortiz.

It’s a way to help the youngest generation test out a future career possibility. “The students are thrilled to be challenged in this way,” says Anita Thompson, the Lincoln School’s Visual Arts Department Head. “The idea of repurposing material and envisioning different uses for found objects was a great way to creatively and constructively combine artistic vision and critical thinking.”
