Students Face Off in StyleWeek Competition

Sixteen students from local colleges and universities vied Tuesday night for a chance to show their work in an upcoming StyleWeek Providence.

Hundreds of students submitted designs to participate in StyleWeek Providence’s inaugural student design competition. Sixteen of those aspiring designers from colleges and universities in Rhode Island and Massachusetts were selected to participate in Tuesday night’s SEED competition at the Providence Biltmore. They had to stick to a theme of "recycled and sustainable fashion."

“So many of the student submissions were amazing,” StyleWeek Providence founder and president Rosanna Ortiz Sinel said in the program. “It was very hard to choose only fifteen.”

The students who made the cut were: Jillian Banta, Cindy Yang, Gina Ciavarelli and Kelsey McGinty from the University of Rhode Island; Austin Snyder and Caitrin Watson from Brown University; Kelly Zogheb, Amanda Goss, Lily Harris and Hope MacDonald from the Rhode Island School of Design; Zachary William Allen and Kwong Hui Yee from the Massachusetts College of Art; Kristie Gill, Tatiana Cueva and Betsy Calixte from Boston School of Fashion Design; and Shineca Jack from Lasell College.

A panel of five judges assessed the designs and determined who would win $500 cash, the opportunity to show designs in StyleWeek in the Spring/Summer Show in 2013 and two months of public relations and marketing representation from StyleWeek.
