SantaCon is Coming to Town

Have you readied your Santa suit and rehearsed your "Ho, ho, ho"?

Bid farewell to the crummy holiday parties of yesteryear and do this instead: Dress as Santa, raise some money for charity, drink a few brews and have a jolly time with bedecked friends, old and new, at SantaCon Newport.

Sure, some SantaCons in other cities have a bad rep, but Newport's annual event is a dignified one. There are rules, people, not limited to:

  • You MUST address everyone as "Santa."
  • You SHOULD "ho-ho-ho" like Santa.
  • You OUGHT to give out gifts like Santa.
  • You MIGHT want to drink like Santa.

If you plan to attend SantaCon in Newport this Saturday, December 6, here are a few more pointers from the pros:

  • Santa does NOT make children cry.
  • Santa needs to stay hydrated and have a full fat tummy.
  • Santa doesn't drink and drive and neither should you.

SantaCon kicks off in Newport's Washington Square, then travels to Caleb and Broad, Tavern on Broadway and Fastnet Pub. Detour over to Marlborough Street and compete in the third-annual Santa Sack Race (honestly, do you think you should miss this?) then continue on to One Pelham East and, the last stop of the evening, Perry Mill Tavern. Stick around for the Santa dance party; the Big Guy (or Gal) with the best moves wins a prize, so you're sure to see some sweatin' Santas tearing up the dance floor.

Remember to bring a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots, some cash to keep the bar lines moving, and a little more cash to purchase raffle tickets for prizes including hotel stays and restaurant gift certificates. Raffle proceeds benefit Finnz Fundz, a nonprofit that supports children and families battling cystic fibrosis.

The Details: Sat., Dec. 6. Noon. Free; drink specials available to those in costume. More info: santaconnewport.com.
