As the first of its kind in Rhode Island, the Zoo is excited to bring this enchanting multicultural experience to the state. The event which is produced by Hanart Culture has been in the planning for almost a year. With more than fifty unique light displays, each contains up to dozens of silk-wrapped and hand-painted steel structures created using traditional lantern-making skills.

Lantern celebrations are closely tied with the traditional Chinese New Year and represents a time of peace, good luck and enjoying time with family and friends. As an important part of the Rhode Island community for nearly 150 years, the Zoo is committed to creating an environment that is inclusive and continually strives to build engaging and inspiring experiences for all its visitors.

“Our zoo is meant to be a place that’s welcoming to all. We support and celebrate diversity and we are excited to celebrate Asian culture during this truly remarkable event,” says Jeremy Goodman, Roger Williams Park Zoo executive director.

Aside from the lanterns, attendees will delight in savory Asian-inspired cuisine and drinks as well as traditional performances from a selection of artists. The Zoo’s soaring eagle zip ride will also be open, allowing guests the chance to witness this spectacle of dazzling lights from 115 feet high.

This event is not only a celebration of Asian culture, but it is inspired by our wild world and further fosters the Zoo’s message of conservation. From tigers, lions, rhinos and kangaroos to tropical birds, dolphins and a wide variety of other animals and plants – children and adults of all ages are sure to delight in the magic of this fully immersive experience.

“We are thankful to be able to offer this unique experience to our community. This is an amazing opportunity for visitors to enjoy our zoo, connect with nature and wildlife, and engage themselves in new cultural traditions,” said Goodman.

The event also supports the Zoo’s ongoing world class animal care, local and global conservation initiatives, and educational programming. After its temporary closure last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and still operating at limited capacity, the Zoo hopes to make up for its lost revenue.

Even when closed to the public, the Zoo never stops caring for its more than 800 animals that call it home. With each ticket purchased, visitors are sharing the care for their favorite animal friends.

Make this stunning display of artistry your new annual tradition! Held Wednesday – Sunday evenings from 5:30 – 10:00 pm, admission to the Asian Lantern Spectacular is separate from regular zoo admission.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience the Zoo is enforcing updated safety protocols and procedures including limited capacity, mask requirements and updated cleaning procedures.

Tickets for the lantern experience must be bought in advance online. With the anticipation of this event selling out quickly, reserve your tickets today at rwpzoo.org/lantern.
