Bliss Natural Grocer & Cafe

Lisel Woods, co-owner (with Alex Hart Nibbrig) of Newport’s Bliss Natural Grocer & Cafe, concedes that just maybe she should have put cafe before grocer for top billing. Undoubtedly, it’s the prepared foods that draw the summer crowds to this small corner eatery. The counter is crammed with flaky ham and cheese twists and breakfast calzones whose insides have oozed just a bit ($3), and refrigerated cases brim with entrees and sides like lemon thyme chicken ($4) and twice-baked potatoes. Headed for the sand? A bevy of complete “Beach Lunches” run just $8, and when the sun sets, folks flock here for the $7 dinner special (think crispy snapper over vegetable lo mein with sweet chili sauce). The grocer part of the enterprise includes shelves stocked with natural products: local honey from Aquidneck Island Apiaries, condiments by Bristol-based Wicked Good Company, and produce and fresh eggs from nearby farms. Not everything’s on a grab-n-go schedule though — with lots of outdoor seating, Bliss is an inviting place to sit and graze.
