This year’s Bryant University Women’s Summit featured fierce women leaders delivering inspirational keynote speeches with important takeaway lessons for every attendee. The lineup of notable speakers included Kay Koplovitz, founder of The USA Network, Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group and Marshawn Evans, J.D., reinvention strategist. Breakout sessions also occurred in between each address, during which women could learn about everything from financial planning to mentoring and career advancement from leading experts in various fields.

Valuable presentations were also given by Heidi Hanna, Ph.D., who is CEO and founder of SYNERGY, a coaching and consulting company specializing in health and wellness solutions, and the 2013 New England Businesswoman of the year, Karen Kaplan, president of Hill Holliday. For those who could not attend every speech and session at the summit, we rounded up a list of ten things we learned from the first half of the day, in hopes that you can grow and learn from these powerful women, too. We'll also be following up with more in depth blog posts on both Huffington's and Evans's keynote addresses.

  1. “It’s important for you to have your own personal brand, and build that up.” –Kay Koplovitz
  2. “People treat you the way you treat yourself. Take a seat at the table, and if there’s a head seat, sit there. Speak loudly and clearly, and lean in. You need to lean in to be heard.” –Kay Koplovitz
  3. “Get out of your comfort zone to make progress. Talk to your supervisor and make it clear you want opportunities or assignments. Don’t wait for someone to tap you on the shoulder. You have to do it.” –Kay Koplovitz
  4. Financial Planning Session: “Even if you can’t contribute the maximum to your 401K, at least contribute enough to meet your company’s match. That’s free money.”
  5. Financial Planning Session: “For those retiring to Florida, be sure to establish residence there; register to vote, join a parish, get doctors down there, so that you can prove residency and take advantage of fewer taxes.”
  6. Power Plenary Session: “Recognize the cost of multi-tasking. It’s better to break each task into smaller chunks so you can give it your full attention and best energy.” –Heidi Hanna, Ph.D.
  7. “”Never forget how lucky you are. Always help others. Your candle loses nothing when it lights another.” –Karen Kaplan
  8. “Women must lean in, but we must also lean back. We have to lean back in order to jump higher.” –Arianna Huffington
  9. “Failure is not a problem. It’s a stepping stone to success.” –Arianna Huffington
  10. “Sometimes we need to disconnect from technology and connect with ourselves…Just because we can work from anywhere doesn’t mean we should be working all the time.” –Arianna Huffington
