A local farmer grows shellfish deserving of their hefty provenance. Cleaners of the bay, economic powerhouses, the latest in livestock…oysters are also just damn good to eat.
The normally serene grounds of the Norman Bird Sanctuary came alive as 500 people flocked to the nonprofit’s annual Bird Ball. To celebrate the return of the Eastern Bluebird to the sanctuary, everything from the cocktails to the attire to the music (blues) was based around the theme “Paradise in Blue.” The fete raised $90,000, to fund the sanctuary’s educational programs for kids.

With a little help from Tiffany & Co., The Preservation Society of Newport County’s annual fundraising gala at the Breakers
was extra opulent this year. A remembrance of the 1957 Tiffany Ball, the benefit featured a “blue box” raffle (top prizes were
a men’s watch and platinum, pearl and diamond earrings) and a display of nineteenth-century flatware and ceramics. The black-tie bash netted about $300,000 for the society.
