House Lust: Shelter Harbor Inn is Up for Sale

The historic Westerly property is offered by Randall Realtors.

Shelter Harbor Inn, nestled in the heart of its namesake village in Westerly, is on the market for $2,399,000.

The inn, located at 10 Wagner Road, has seen its ups and downs over the years. Built in 1800, it first served as a farmhouse and was converted into a country inn in 1911, then a nursing home, then back to an inn again. Current proprietor, Jim Dey, purchased the property in 1976 and, over the course of forty years, he transformed it into a quaint yet upscale resort with three buildings, twenty-four well-appointed guestrooms, a restaurant, two tennis courts and a rooftop hot tub.

But the inn has fallen on hard times. It entered foreclosure proceedings in 2016 but the owners were able to halt the process. Unfortunately, the inn didn’t bounce back. A dearth of negative reviews on websites including TripAdvisor and Yelp cite neglect — “Door knobs fell off room doors, shower heads leaked, carpet was simply gross in one room, lamp shades taped together, bathroom doors wouldn’t shut,” writes one reviewer — and poor service in the restaurant, which is open to the public.

This grand old inn in lovely Shelter Harbor needs a fresh start, and it’s certainly worth rescuing. Here’s your House Lust:
