He Looked Pretty Good in White, Too.
I loved the story Mel Allen wrote for us in October on Rocco Baldelli, who announced today that he would return to the Tampa Rays as a special assistant and instructor, while he deals with a shoulder injury and channelopathy. Rocco left it open as to whether he might return to the field someday, with a quote to the St. Petersburg Times that was typically gracious and low-key: "I don’t think I’m ready to retire, I’m only 28 years old. But at this point, I can’t really do what I want to do on the field…. Hopefully, some day, maybe I can play again. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen."
Such a class act, this one. And while we loved having him home, it’s nice to see the Rays appreciate what they’ve got. (In more ways than one. "He looks better in blue," jokes Rays Executive V.P. Andrew Friedman.)
