Get Out of Town: Horseneck Beach and Buzzards Bay Brewing

Plan a fun beach day in Westport, Massachusetts, then top off the afternoon with craft brews and live music.

Here's an idea for a quick daytime adventure when you want to get away from it all. Westport’s Horseneck Beach is located in an idyllic rural setting surrounded by drifting sand dunes and two miles of scenic coastline. The $15 out of state parking fee ($13 for Massachusetts residents) is a small price to pay to for a day of walking a beautiful beach and splashing in impressive waves. At the rockier end of the shoreline, you can see protected piping plovers darting from the sky to the surf and above the beach grass and dunes. But watch out for those aggressive sea gulls; we saw one trespass on a beachgoer's blanket, grab a bag of unopened Cheetos and tear it open with its beak. A seagull smorgasbord ensued. 5 John Reed Rd., Westport

After a few hours of beach time, a stop at Handy Hill Creamery is in order. All of the ice cream comes from Bliss Dairy, but the flavors are fun and seasonal. The Blueberry and Wild Berry Crumble frozen yogurt are a must, but I also can’t turn down a good soft serve twist in a plain cone. Clam cakes here are always top notch with fluffy dough that’s crisp on the outside with tender clams on the inside. Sit at a picnic table and take in the no-frills family-friendly spot. 55 Hix Bridge Rd., Westport, 508-636-8888

No day trip is complete without beer, and the nearby Buzzards Bay Brewing offers tastings. But if you arrive on certain afternoons, you might be lucky enough to soak up live acoustic music, sip beer poured from the outdoor taps and enjoy food from a visiting food truck. They always have games like cornhole and tetherball, and there's also a row of colorful tractors lined up if you like that sort of thing. Taco Tuesdays take place from 4:30-7 p.m. when the Mercury Cafe at Buzzards Bay serves tacos; Live Music Wednesdays take place from 4-6:15 p.m.; live music and Raw Bar Thirsty Thursdays take place from 4:30-6:45 p.m. and include oysters from Cuttyhunk Shellfish Farms; and Fridays from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Neil McCarthy and Friends play live acoustic music and you can enjoy food from the food truck. 98 Horseneck Rd., Westport, 508-636-2288,
