Cow Bingo at Swamp Yankee Days

Got a hankering for some country living? Head to Washington County Fairgrounds in Richmond for Swamp Yankee Days, a celebration of centuries of rural life in southern New England. This year’s festivities on October 11 and 12 will feature competitive pulls by both garden and antique tractors, old-time bluegrass and country music, antique fire truck and car shows, plus arts and crafts for the kids. Wagering types can buy a plot in cow chip bingo, when the big ring is cordoned off into sections like a bingo card and cows are brought in. “It’s a big hit, because everybody’s standing around waiting for a cow to poop,” says Scott W. Barber, chief of the Carolina Volunteer Firefighters Association, which organizes the event with the help of the Chariho Rotary Club. “It was over pretty quick last year, as I recall.”
