Bring Your Own Improv Celebrates its Tenth Anniversary
The interactive comedy show is hosting a celebration for all ages to enjoy on Friday.
Bring Your Own Improv (BYOI), is celebrating its ten-year anniversary on Friday, August 3 at the Warwick Center for the Arts. BYOI is an interactive comedy show for all ages to enjoy. Join members for an evening of laughter and comedic humor, including games and a family-friendly show. Stay for some cake! Showtimes are at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
BYOI is an improv group that’s like not like the rest. While most improv groups solicit ideas from the crowd and produce comedic skits, BYOI is unique in that they encourage audience members to participate in their skits, or “games,” as BYOI calls them.
“At the start of each game, our cast members fully explain the rules so audience members can voluntarily choose to play along on stage. When someone from the audience comes up on stage, we do everything in our power to make their time on stage successful,” says Daniel Lee White, Bring Your Own Improv’s producer and cast member. “We want you to have a great time, and feel welcome and supported on stage so you can get laughs in front of your family and friends. It’s what keeps our fans coming back to the show.”
BYOI also runs a Youth Collective open to thirteen- to eighteen-year-olds Friday evenings at 5:30 p.m. If you have a performer/comedian in the family, this program will teach them self-confidence and social-emotional skills as well as improve their improvisation skills. No previous experience is necessary to join. Each session lasts for two months; the first month consisting of classes followed by one month of shows. One of the best parts is that your child can continue to take these classes until they age out! Classes are $95. Two Youth Collective members have actually gone on to audition and become official BYOI cast members.
Aside from hosting classes, BYOI also uses its comedic skills for community outreach. Every month, the cast visits the Izzy Family Room — a family room on the pediatric oncology floor at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. They bring laughs and smiles to the staff, patients and their families.
