Bishop Feehan Pledges to Drive Safe for Kelly Clarkson

With our help, the Attleboro school can earn a Kelly Clarkson concert and a big grant -- all for practicing safe driving methods.

Car accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States. But Brian Crossen, a chemistry teacher at Bishop Feehan High School, is working (albeit very creatively) to slow that statistic. Crossen entered the Attleboro, Massachusetts, high school into State Farm's Celebrate My Drive contest to advocate for safety behind the wheel.

The two schools in the contest with the most pledges from students, faculty, parents, alumni and members of the community will receive a $100,000 grant as well as a private concert with Grammy Award-winning singer and "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson. A portion of the grant must be used for a teen driver safety program to benefit the students; the other 90 percent can be spent on school-related needs defined by the winning school and approved by State Farm.

As part of the contest, Crossen (a HUGE Kelly Clarkson fan) adapted the pop star's single, “Catch My Breath” into “Check My Belt,” with witty lyrics designed to get teens and adults to buckle up. Crossen’s lyrical prowess and theatrical dance moves in the music video have helped the school climb to fourth place, but the students still need more votes to win the competition.

Bishop Feehan is encouraging members of the community to help make this dream a reality. Through October 26, anyone can visit Celebrate My Drive and make a commitment to drive safely for Bishop Feehan. Visitors must select "Massachusetts" as the state, type in "Attleboro" as the city and select "Community Member" as the affiliation. Visitors must also answer two relatively simple questions pertaining to safe driving measures. Check the box off confirming that you commit to safe driving and you are on your way to helping Bishop Feehan, the only local school in the running, take the save-driving cake. Winning schools will be announced November 6.
