The roots of rugby date back to the ancient Greeks. Rebellion Rugby, a semi-professional team based in Providence, is keeping the tradition alive. Founded in 2011 by Lawrence Almagno Jr., Rebellion competes up and down the East Coast in spring and summer against teams like the Bucks County Sharks and the Brooklyn Kings. Its home turf is Brown University’s Marvel Field. The team is a mix of former high school and college players from Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. The USA Rugby League allows each team to recruit up to three international players, and the Rebellion has hosted players from as far away as Australia. “They’ve been playing since they could crawl,” says general manager Mike Kelly. The team, which practices at Classical High School, also develops talent from Providence public schools.
