A New Chapter for the Edgewood Yacht Club
A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for this weekend.
The cranes and steel have arrived at the beloved Edgewood Yacht Club.
A groundbreaking on the new clubhouse building is scheduled this weekend. In January 2011, the club was ravaged by a fire during an electrical snowstorm, but fundraising efforts have enabled the restoration of the club on Narragansett Bay, where generations of Rhode Islanders learned to sail.
"All we have to do is build it," says Commodore Wayne Kezirian.
The club has long hosted Brown University's nationally ranked sailing team. The 4,500-square-foot building will be partially owned by Brown and become the permanent home of the team. It's scheduled to be completed in 2017.
The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m. It will be a casual, low-key event.
"We wanted people to know we were getting started, since it's been so long since the fire," Kezirian says.
