In a region where warm weather only lasts for a few short months, Rhode Islanders have learned how to take full advantage of those sunny days. Many local gyms and yoga studios in Rhode Island are hosting classes that offer beginners and seasoned athletes the chance to get outside, feel the burn and sweat under the summer sun.

Mountain Hiking

Trekking up a couple hundred feet to reach the summit of a mountain may seem daunting to the inexperienced, but PE Fitness Studio located in Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket, has the program you need if you’re looking for your summer plans to peak. Their Mountain Strong program involves six weeks of small group training and includes group hikes at two mountains in New England.

Sand Dune Experience

Playing in the sand isn’t all sandcastles and digging for buried treasure. Every Wednesday night through September 19, head to the beach with Laidback Fitness for a seventy-five-minute sand dune experience where you will run, crawl, lift and carry heavy items along the shore. With the sounds of nature as your new workout playlist and an intense session of training, you are sure to feel the burn at the beach. Looking to push yourself even more? Every session has an optional bonus rep at the end with additional swimming and trail running. The class begins at 6:15 p.m. and will be held rain or shine.

Beach Boot Camp

What’s the best way to take advantage of a beach day? Getting there super early for a beach boot camp class before you soak in the sun on your towel! Join Elevate Fitness at Third Beach from 6–7 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday until August 8 or at Second Beach in Middletown from 5:30–6:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday from July 10–August 30. The boot camp is open to people of all fitness levels. Plus, rainy days are no excuse to skip a workout because their studio is available for classes on mornings when the beach isn’t an option.

Yoga on the Beach

If you want a break from the burpees (or finding your inner zen by the ocean is more your speed), join All that Matters Yoga for daily morning yoga classes at South Kingstown Town Beach at Matunuck. The classes will run through Labor Day. Plus, the studio will also offer classes at South Kingstown Town Beach beneath the light of the moon on June 28, July 27 and August 26 from 7:45–8:45 p.m.

Yoga in the Park

Sun salutations are best done – you guess it – in the actual sun. Deliver your most authentic warrior pose or downward dog with Providence Power Yoga every Friday now until August 25 at Rose Larissa Park in East Providence. The hour-long session is from 6:30–7:30 a.m. The yoga studio will also hold a sunrise yoga class at India Point Park in Providence on Wednesdays at 6:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 8 a.m. now until August 18. The best part? The classes are free.
