Providence Public Library’s fourth annual Exhibition and Program series called HairBrained is focused on hair. Specifically, the exhibition explores the ways in which hair defines and reflects culture, self-identity, agency and politics while the program series, which is inspired by images and texts in the exhibition, will offer cultural programs and educational activities for all ages that explore how and why we have grown, cut, shaved, shaped, woven, adorned and covered the hair on our heads, from centuries ago until today.

The HairBrained exhibition features a selection of items from Providence Public Library’s collections: postcards, photographs, pochoir prints, magazines, historic children’s books, advertising trade cards and more. Items will be on exhibit in the Providence Journal Rhode Island Room on level one from March to June.

Veteran Journalist, Former USA Today Editor-in-Chief Joanne Lipman at PPL June 19 @ Providence Public Library

Providence Public Library is pleased to welcome veteran journalist and former USA Today Editor-in-Chief Joanne Lipman. Join us for a talk and book signing by Joanne Lipman on her new bestselling book, That’s What She Said: What Men Need to Know (and Women Need to Tell Them) About Working Together.

Lipman contends that to achieve parity in the office, women don’t have to change — men do — and in this inclusive and realistic handbook, she offers solutions to help professionals solve gender gap issues and achieve parity at work. While companies with more women in senior leadership perform better by virtually every financial measure, and women employees help boost creativity and can temper risky behavior like the financial gambles behind the 2008 economic collapse, 95 percent of Fortune 500 chief executives in the United States are men, and women hold only seventeen percent of seats on corporate boards. And while more men are reaching across the gender divide, genuinely trying to reinvent the culture and transform the way we work together, fumbles, missteps, frustration, and misunderstanding continue to inflict real and lasting damage on women’s careers.

Filled with illuminating anecdotes, data from the most recent relevant studies, and stories from Lipman’s own journey to the top of a male-dominated industry, That’s What She Said is a book about success that persuasively shows why empowering women as true equals is an essential goal for us all—and offers a roadmap for getting there.

Thanks to the Brown Bookstore, all books will be available for sale and signing by the author.
