To Win or Lose All: William S. Sims and the U.S. Navy in the First World War @ Naval War College Museum
Feb 21 @ 10:00 am – 4:30 pm
To Win or Lose All: William S. Sims and the U.S. Navy in the First World War @ Naval War College Museum | Newport | Rhode Island | United States

The Naval War College Museum presents a new exhibit, “To Win or Lose All: Williams S. Sims and the U.S. Navy in the First World War.” The exhibit occupies the museum’s gallery on the second floor.
To Win or Lose All explores the Navy’s role in securing victory for the Allies during the First World War. Under Admiral Sims’s leadership, American warships escorted convoys to France, laid mines in the North Sea, and hunted German submarines. On land, naval aviators flew scouting and bombing missions while Marines fought in the trenches east of Paris. While the sweeping naval campaigns of 1942-1945 may attract more scholarly attention, the foundation for their success was established twenty-five years earlier when the Navy operated for the first time as part of a coalition. Indeed, many officers who rose to prominence in the Second World War – Ernest J. King, Chester W. Nimitz, and Harold R. Stark, to name a few – gained valuable experience with combined operations during the first global conflict of the twentieth century. Curator Rob Doane hopes, “that this exhibit will encourage visitors to understand Admiral Sims and the sailors who served under him as real people who worked under difficult circumstances to meet the enormous challenges of wartime service.”

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island Body Mass Index Screening @ Project Outreach
Feb 22 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island Body Mass Index Screening @ Project Outreach | Providence | Rhode Island | United States

To help individuals better determine if they are leading a healthy lifestyle, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) is offering a free body mass index (BMI) screenings. BMI is used as a screening tool to identify possible weight problems for adults. However, BMI is not a diagnostic tool. For example, a person may have a high BMI. However, to determine if excess weight is a health risk, a healthcare provider would need to perform further assessments. These assessments might include skinfold thickness measurements, evaluations of diet, physical activity, family history, and other appropriate health screenings.

FirstWorks Artistic Icon Series Presents: American Rhapsody: The Gershwin Songbook @ Veterans Memorial Auditorium
Feb 22 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
FirstWorks Artistic Icon Series Presents: American Rhapsody: The Gershwin Songbook @ Veterans Memorial Auditorium | Providence | Rhode Island | United States

Revel in a glorious evening of iconic American music by one of the most indelible composers of the twentieth century, George Gershwin.

Nearly a century after the songs were composed, Gershwin’s music remains as fresh and irresistible as it did during the Jazz Age. His poetic melodies and eclectic oeuvre of everything including Broadway, Hollywood, opera and classic American standards have left a legacy that audiences love to hear again and again.

Led by vocalist Michael Andrew, hailed as “the next Harry Connick Jr.” by The New York Post, the seventeen-piece Gershwin Big Band brings beloved Gershwin standards like “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone to Watch O’er Me” and many more to life in this inspirational new program produced and created by members of the Gershwin family.
