The Gala, our largest fundraising event, is held every other year. The 2012 theme will celebrate the Van Wickles’ and Lyons’ deep love of yachting, their collection of Herreshoff steam and sailing yachts, and Blithewold’s unique setting on Narragansett Bay which provides a perfect climate for Blithewold’s rich collection of rare and unusual tree specimens. Blithewold's unique location on Narragansett Bay, with seventy acres of fertile land, and a protected deep water harbor for boats, with superb sailing on the Bay and easy access to the Atlantic Ocean was the primary reason Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle purchased the property in 1896. The rich soil and varied micro climates allowed Bessie's love of horticulture and landscape design to flourish and the dock and bathhouse allowed Augustus to pursue his love of yachting and provided easy access to his growing collection of Herreshoff yachts, the 78 foot steam yacht the Marjorie, and the racing sailboats, the Esperanza and the Wild Swan. In recognition of Blithewold's spectacular waterfront setting, the family's enjoyment of Narragansett Bay, and Augustus Van Wickle's distinction as Commodore of the Bristol Yacht Club and member of the New York Yacht Club, we are planning our 2012 Gala: The Yachtsmen's Ball-Celebrating Summers on the Bay to take place on Saturday, August 18, 2012. The event will honor the outstanding contributions of Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln Mossop of East Greenwich and Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Williams of Bristol. |
