The Schools Issue

Despite news stories that focus on high-decibel confrontations and overspent budgets, there are fascinating things happening in Rhode Island schools. Elementary school kids are bending their brains by learning Chinese in Smithfield, and Westerly Middle School students are recycling restaurant cooking oil into biofuel, then using the profits to help the needy. New Brown grads find their tender optimism as teachers is rewarded by enthusiastic kids in inner-city schools hungry to learn. And RISD students are designing high-tech accessories for NASA that bring creature comforts to outer space. Finally, we present a report card on Rhode Island’s high schools, and pinpoint which ones are giving taxpayers the best bang for their buck.
