Inside Out

Holistic skincare’s natural approach is making a comeback.

Skin-calming maskYou’ve tried every anti-acne product on the market, but nothing seems to do the trick. Not surprisingly, holistic skincare is steadily becoming a popular alternative. Its focus is discovering the root cause of the problem—whether it be eczema, super sensitive skin or rosacea—inside of the body rather than its not so pretty effect. “This is something that’s always been around, but recently there’s been a huge increase in interest,” says Laurie Neronha of Viriditas Beautiful Skin Therapies. To combat clients’ skin issues, Neronha uses myriad tools, from the ancient principles of Chinese medicine, herbalism and Ayurveda to decidedly modern anti-aging technology, including light therapy and microcurrent. “I look at skin as a reflection of what’s going on in the inside,” she says. Example: Say you visit Neronha with frequent bouts of hives. Like a detective, she will study your skin and lifestyle (including diet and stress level). Often, hives are a hyper inflammatory response to a stressed liver, so she might suggest a herbal supplement that supports the organ. Other conditions call for different remedies, such as an all-natural lotion by G.M. Collin or perhaps even one of her own concoctions. Facials range in price from $80–$150.
