Budget Burgers

The state’s five best burgers under ten bills.

Mudville Pub's burgerMudville Pub
8 West Marlborough St.,
Newport, 849-1408, mudvillepub.com

Price $9.50
Size 8 oz.
Bun Who would notice the bun on this monster?
Beef Darkly charred on the outside, juicy in the center and dripping with cheese
Extras Mozzarella, feta, blue or superbly oozy boursin buried in the middle
Verdict Think steak, only messier and, perhaps, even better. If your appetite is insatiable, this one’s the burger king.

Fat Belly’s
254 Old Forge Rd., Warwick,
884-2112; 378 Main St.,
East Greenwich, 884-3434,
fatbellyspub.com

Price $7.95
Size 8 oz.
Bun Kaiser Söze
Beef A more firmly packed patty that gets tough when cooked past medium-rare
Extras Warm blue cheese
Verdict This is a burger that yearns to be washed down with a beer and the steady sound of “Sports Center” on continuous loop.

Lili Marlene
422 Atwells Ave.,
Providence, 751-4996

Price $4.50
Size 5 oz.
Bun Standard seeded softie
Beef Small in circumference but substantial enough to get a real mid-rare
Extras American cheese and a slather of caramelized onions
Verdict Perhaps the best burger for the money.  You might be able to down it in six bites, but each one is worth its weight in gold.

Red Bridge Tavern

East Providence, 438-3899

Price $7.50
Size 8 oz.
Bun The Wonder Bread of buns
Beef Irregularly packed and wrist-licking juicy

Verdict The quintessential American rendition. This burger and Levis are the reason Europeans continue to envy the good old U.S. of A.

Stanley’s
371 Richmond St.,
Providence, 270-9292
stanleyshamburgers.com

Price $2.59
Size 2 oz.
Bun Small and squooshy
Beef Slightly crunchy on the outside with a tinge of l’eau de lardExtras The key to any Stanley’s burger is the sprinkling of sweet grilled onions
Verdict For fast food lovers who actually like their meat to taste like something other than grill grease. Small, affordable, McBetter.

The best burger (and homemade hand cut french fries) we've found in RI, since moving here from the Washington, DC area nearly two years ago are the ones at Joe's American Bar & Grill. We have only been to the one at Providence Place Mall - there may be others, since we were told it was a chain. We are always in search of the best burger and fries, and this my friends, is it - the real deal. We also tried L'Attitude in Pawtuxet Village (Cranston) and Rick's Roadhouse on Richmond Street (Providence). While their burgers left nothing to complain about, the rolls were mushy, rendered more so by the wet burger and accompaniments - and the french fries were white and formerly frozen :-(

The Beef Barn in North Smithfield hands down the best burger in the whole state. Cooked on a charbroiler, big burger big taste. Short money. Hand cut fries always packed. To Stanley's I say Where's the beef? It is bun and grilled onions I think there may have been a burger but it was very very small.
