In like a lamb, out like a lion.
One weekend last summer, twenty women whose musical experience ranged from zero to “I played clarinet in junior high” shyly picked up instruments. By Sunday night, the new bandmates were rocking out on bass, guitar and drums. “The transformation was dramatic,” says Hilary Jones, one of the co-organizers of Girls Rock! Rhode Island, which this month hosts its second annual Ladies Rock Camp, a three-day session that includes everything from music lessons and songwriting to designing band merch. “It encourages women to be loud and express themselves,” says Jones. At the camp’s final concert, the women show off their new skills. And courage. “I tell them if they screw up, do the same thing again so people think it’s on purpose. Confidence is very important.” Find info on upcoming Girls Rock! Rhode Island camps at girlsrockri.org. —NICOLE MARANHAS
