The Short List

We asked the film festival’s organizers to give us the inside scoop on the movies we shouldn’t miss. This year’s event runs from June 5 to 10. For a complete schedule, see newportfilmfestival.com.

Evening
This film, scenes of which were shot in Tiverton and Newport, is loaded with female talent, including Meryl Streep, Claire Danes and Vanessa Redgrave. Based on Susan Minot’s book of the same title, it’s about a dying woman who looks back on her youth as her two daughters struggle with her impending death.

Deep Water
A documentary chronicling the tragic story of Donald Crowhurst, a down-and-out business man who makes a run to win the 1969 Golden Globe solo, a nonstop, round-the-world yacht race.

Crazy Love
Simultaneously romantic and disturbing, this documentary by publicist-turned-filmmaker Dan Klores examines the contorted relationship between lawyer Burt Pugach and the beautiful (and much younger) Linda Riss.

In the Shadow of the Moon
In this stunning documentary, original footage is interwoven with firsthand testimony from members of NASA’s Apollo missions, which put twelve men on the moon between 1968 and 1972.

War/Dance
The winners of this year’s Sundance Film Festival documentary directing award, Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine, have created a moving film that follows the journey of three children living in war-torn Uganda who make it to the finals of the country’s national music and dance competition.

My Best Friend (Mon Meilleur Ami)
With French megastar Daniel Autieul in the leading role, this comedy tells the story of a man who enlists the help of a taxi driver to teach him how to make friends so he can win a bet.

Broken English
In Zoe Cassavetes’ romantic comedy, Parker Posey stars as Nora, a thirty-something without kids, a relationship or a job she loves — until she unexpectedly meets a Frenchman named Julian and her luck changes.

This Is England
Set in the summer of 1983, this film tells the story of a twelve-year-old boy who finds friendship among a gang of skinheads.

Exiled
In the days before Portugal hands the colony over to China, two hit men from Hong Kong are sent to Macau to take out a renegade member who’s trying to establish a new life.

Rocket Science
A drama about a high school guy with a severe stuttering disorder who joins the debate team to win over the girl of his dreams.
