Separation Clarification

Thank you for the lovely review of Castle Hill Inn’s chef’s menu in the November issue [Dining Out]. We are thrilled you enjoyed it and honored to have Karsten Hart as our new executive chef.

One important point to clarify that was included in the review: The Castle Hill bride is one-of-a-kind, and as such we offer only one signature location for wedding ceremonies and receptions — the Chalet Lawn overlooking Narragansett Bay. Our forty-acre peninsula guarantees exclusivity for our clientele and we would never permit wedding receptions to occur concurrently. The day that Karen Deutsch visited us, we hosted one wedding reception on the Chalet Lawn and an intimate vow renewal and family celebration in our private dining rooms located inside our historic inn. Castle Hill weddings are unforgettable because we take care to ensure exclusivity for our guests.

Fresh-faced Farmer

I am writing to congratulate you on the amazing article that was written for the month of November titled, “Fresh on the Farm.” The growth of young local farmers in Rhode Island in response to the demand to buy local is so exciting! I wanted to thank you also for featuring one of Beaverhead Farm’s Scotch Highland cattle in the article. Beaverhead Farm is one of Pat McNiff’s rental farms for his business, Pat’s Pastured. I am livestock manager on Beaverhead Farm and also run my own grass-fed beef business. As a twenty-one-year-old college student at the University of Rhode Island and a young farmer in the state, I am very happy to have your support.

Thank you for your timely article [Reporter, October]. I, for one, am glad Rhode Island is finally going to require some type of ID when voting. This summer, I discovered someone voted in my name in North Kingstown in 2004. They used a name I hadn’t used in seven years and an address I hadn’t lived at in ten.

As a Virginia resident, which is where I voted in the 2004 elections,
I find this to be quite troubling. This all came to light when a juror questionnaire for the U.S. District Court in Providence was mailed to me in my maiden name at my mom’s address.

If this instance of fraud was a felony crime that I needed to report to the police or file an official complaint about, nobody ever mentioned I should do that. Until I read your article, it didn’t occur to me that it would need to be reported as such, given the long list of people in Rhode Island I’ve spoken with about my situation. I hope my story is an isolated incident, but if it’s not, Rhode Island definitely needs reforms regarding voter identification.

I have lived in RI my whole life and enjoy your paper very much but am quite surprised that Gem .Ravioli in Johnston has never been visited or nominated for any Best Of RI. I just visited the new location on Mineral Spring Ave in No. Prov. and it was delicious. It would be nice to see a small town staple like Gem get some well deserved recognition.
