Bordeaux Country

wine racksWhen the owners moved into this 1928 Aquidneck Island stone house, which once housed equipment for a nearby estate, the cellar was literally that. Fifty thousand pounds of coal, stone and pigeon droppings were removed before construction began. Undaunted, the couple, along with Newport contractor Antone Viveiros, forged on, designing a temperature-controlled cellar (mechanicals magically disappear behind mahogany racks) and a stylish, well-appointed entertainment space. The latter, outfitted for cooking, conjures fabulous old world appeal with a rustic brick floor and stone walls. Never mind the site’s rocky ledges that proved immovable. These ingenious owners simply incorporated them, crafting stunning tiered rooms (see page 61) that suit the house. An antique stone eagle (from Cottage and Garden in Newport) guards the original doors. Should the mood be right, hosts and company raise their glasses outdoors and toast the starry skies.
