Counter Culture

Over-the-counter potions are packaged with big promises. But can these DIY remedies really deliver a younger you? We put them to the test.

Deep Wrinkle EraserSkin Effects “Deep Wrinkle Eraser”
$19.99
The thick, clear ointment that’s dispensed out of this pen-like applicator (good packaging concept; broke immediately) did seem to help fill in light wrinkles. But beware the greasy effect on eye makeup like mascara.
Buxom Lips by Bare EscentualsBuxom Lips by Bare Escentuals
$18
With a princess-worthy color palette and non-tacky feel, this is our go-to gloss. The cool, tingling sensation gives instant plumping gratification, but doesn’t last long. We find ourselves re-applying often.
Crest White Strips SupremeCrest White Strips Supreme
$43
These get high marks for making our pearly whites noticeably whiter. The over-the-counter version does the trick, but if you want an even brighter smile, ask your dentist about these professional-strength strips.
Olay Regenerist Filling and Sealing Wrinkle TreatmentOlay Regenerist Filling + Sealing Wrinkle Treatment
$15.99
We had high hopes after hearing glowing recommendations about this product. While it did soften the look of creases and fine lines, it mostly worked to give the skin a smooth, matte finish.
Buxom Lips by Bare EscentualsUniversity Medical “24-Hour Face Lift”
$39.99
It goes on cool with a slightly unpleasant tingling sensation, but the results (brighter eye area and less noticeable crows’ feet) are worth it. It left a powdery, white residue in some spots, so apply lightly and check the mirror.
