We love lifeguards. They save our lives and look good doing it — but if you’re lucky, you’ll never see them in action. That’s what makes the annual Newport Invitational Lifeguard Tournament, now in its thirty-third year, one of our favorite summer traditions. The two-day competition at Easton’s Beach draws co-ed teams from New York, Cape Cod, New Jersey and Rhode Island to face off in swimming, sprinting,
paddling, rowing and rescues, showing off not only some serious skills but a real commitment to what they do. “We get people well into their fifties,” says tournament organizer George Clarke, who has been the lifeguard supervisor at Easton’s Beach for thirty-nine years.“Some people have competed for the last twenty years. It’s something they train for and look forward to.” They might work on the beach, but this annual event is their real moment in the sun. This year’s tournament is August 4 and 5 at Easton’s Beach in Newport. —NICOLE MARANHAS
