WHO Amos House, a nonprofit social services agency in South Providence, provides emergency meals and shelter, as well as three-month culinary and carpentry training programs.
WHAT The brand new Friendship Café gives participants in the Amos House culinary education program an opportunity to gain real-world work experience. Supervised by Chef Doug Spikes, a graduate of the program himself, students prepare and serve breakfast and lunch plus coffee and ice cream. The menu is affordable (nothing’s more than $8) and locally sourced whenever possible.
WHERE At the corner of Broad and Friendship streets. Pop in for lunch to-go or stay awhile — with oversized windows, an open kitchen and free WiFi, the space was made for lingering.
WHEN Open daily until late afternoon.
HOW Amos House has spent the last two years securing grants, loans and individual donations through its Buy-a-Brick Campaign. An advisory board (including Chef Neath Pal and Blue State Coffee owner Alex Payson) also made the dream a reality.
WHY Beyond serving as a training site and revenue source, project manager Jill Moniz hopes the restaurant will be a safe, healthy (alcohol-free) gathering space. “Poetry slams, guest chef nights and other events will help bring the community together,” she says.
