Best coffee house

Need caffeine? Here’re the best coffee houses for an a.m. fix.

Where: Taylor’s Landing, 3362 Kingstown Rd., West Kingston, 284-0501, taylorslanding.net
Why: It’s a green scene. The water used for brewing is solar heated, and they make a mean (cleaner tasting) cold brew.

Where: Custom House Coffee, 796 Aquidneck Ave., Middletown, 842-0008; 600 Clock Tower Sq., Portsmouth, 682-2600, customhousecoffee.com
Why: Morning stretches to afternoon at Custom, where industrial meets Arts & Crafts. The Honduran Ocotepeque tastes like a candied orange peel dunked in joe.

Where: Coffee Exchange, 207 Wickenden St., Providence, 273-1198, sustainablecoffee.com
Why: The legendary deck has a cult-like following while the interior is a much loved mish-mash of art, intellectualism and pure love of the bean.

Where: The Coffee Depot, 501 Main St., Warren, 608-2553, coffeedepotonline.com
Why: Made for the Sunday paper and a long morning of nothing but caffeine. Part art gallery, all cozy, kick off your shoes and grab the couch.

Where: The Beehive Cafe, 10 Franklin St., Bristol, 396-9994, thebeehivecafe.com
Why: This two-story house-turned-cafe makes a mean mocha, but it’s the pastries — lemon walnut black pepper biscotti! — that sparked our obsession.

Where: Ocean Coffee Roasters (Jonathan’s Ocean Coffee), 22 Washington Sq., Newport, 846-6060, oceancoffee.com
Why: The original Rhode Island roaster, Jonathan’s remains traditional. Full breakfast is available but nothing beats a corner seat with a latte and a good book.

Where: Coastal Roasters, 1791 Main Rd., Tiverton, 624-2343, coastalroasters.com
Why: Coffee, Jimmy Buffett style. People seek out real estate in Tiverton just so they can sip their free-trade joe in an Adirondack with a water view.

This is a travesty of injustice. Why isn't Seven Stars Bakery 820 Hope Street in Providence's beautiful East Side in this list? Their coffee is outstanding and everything they make there is to die for. As just a sample: I suggest the Pecan Sticky Bun, Vermont Cheddar Bread and last but not least Chocolate Chip Cookies. I would write everything they have, but not enough room. They have a nice little patio area that you can sit and relax. Their three locations are busy all the time. There is always a wait on the weekends. That's a sure sign you are a success.
