Brown Bird Needs Our Help

One of our favorite local musicians needs some serious community support. Dave Lamb, one-half of the multi-instrumentalist duo, Brown Bird, was hospitalized last week for severe anemia during a tour stop in Houston, Texas. Dave has had several blood transfusions, but to this date doctors haven't been able to determine what's causing his condition. Here's more information from the band's Tumblr page, presumably written by Brown Bird's MorganEve Swain: We will be able to fly home on Saturday to pursue treatment in Rhode Island, and will be canceling a large percentage of shows until Dave is well enough to get back on the road. For us, canceling shows means not only disappointing our fans and missing out on what we enjoy most, but also going without income....

Yoga Options Across Rhode Island

Here in little Rhody, we love yoga and pilates. But with so many new studios, instructors and styles of yoga popping up all over the state, who can commit to just one place…yet, anyway? Here are some ideas to help you find the right fit. Yoga and Pilates Passport: Created by Jenn Thomas and Jennifer Spaziano, the passport offers participants access to forty-one studios throughout Rhode Island. It’s a passbook of tickets good for two free classes at each studio, though some may offer up to two weeks of classes to new practitioners. Through the passport, yoga enthusiasts can test out a bunch of instructors and a variety of yoga classes at different locations for a fraction of the cost. It retails for $75, and is good through Dec. 31, 2013. Be sure to check the FAQ for...

Journalists Honored for Diverse Coverage

Journalists from around Rhode Island were honored today by some of the people they have written about at the Metcalf Awards for Diversity in the Media. Organized by Rhode Island for Community and Justice, the awards are named for a former Providence Journal publisher named Michael Metcalf. Here is a list of the winners, along with some highlights from the writers’ and presenters’ speeches: Print Monthly:  Rhode Island Monthly Elizabeth Rau, “Uncommon Gifts,” a story about Iraqi refugee Zaid Wadia fleeing to the United States, and coming to work for the Providence Granola Project. “I came to the United States three years ago…and it was my hope and my dream to make a new life for my family and myself. Everything was...

Inside the May Issue: Therapy Dogs

From the big guys to the lap dogs, canines across the state are working hard to achieve the honorable therapy dog status. In our May issue (on newsstands now or available here in a digital subscription) we tail four therapeutic pet volunteers on visits to hospitals, a nursing home and a private residence. But how did the four volunteers, and their owners, earn this designation? We visited Your Courteous Canine in South Kingstown to learn more about what it takes. Instructor Kate Fantoli, who appears in the issue with her therapy dog, Jack, led this February class with two big guys named Bentley. We're happy to report that both Bentleys passed their therapy dog certification tests, and are prepared to cheer up patients and schoolchildren with licks, tricks and doggone...
