2009-09-30Budget AntiquingI’m slowly working my way through Megan Fulweiler’s March cover story, “Tag Sale,” in search of great home stuff on the cheap. (It’s taken me a while because summer weekends are reserved for boating, not shopping.) Among the many things I’ve headed her advice on: terra cotta planters from Job Lot, a rug from Building 19 (an especially necessary buy if your cat has a tendency to use a carpet as a scratching post); and sheets from Matouk Factory Store. My most recent discovery occurred on a long overdue trip to New Bedford, specifically to New England Demolition & Salvage. As Megan mentioned in her write-up it has football fields’ worth of clawfoot tubs and fabulous old doors, windows, shutters and mantels. But it also — and I... |

2009-09-29My New CubicleFiling, faxing, copies, phonecalls, and errands? I don't think so! Not here at Rhode Island Monthly. I am the new editorial intern. Courtesy Pippa Jack and her Craigslist-ing back in 2008, it is finally official. Might I add that I did virtually force Pippa beyond her control to hire me, emailing her more frequently than I emailed my mother. All the persistence paid off since I finally have my dream internship for my senior year of college. Upon arrival, I felt the anxious buzzing and excitement as we spoke of the moving to Allens Avenue, the removal of the paintings and photos on the walls, and the packing of cubicles and offices. I was introduced to the inviting, energetic and comforting staff and have yet to remember everyone's names! I'll keep trying. The staff has me... |

2009-09-24Have You Goby-ed Yet?It seems like there’s a new search engine to pop up almost weekly (I’ve still yet to Bing), but the latest one to launch (just yesterday) caught my eye. Called Goby, it’s geared toward travelers looking for something to do upon arrival at their destination, but can be used locally as well if you’re looking for, say, a bar where you can grab a burger and hear local music on Saturday night, or the off-roading trails closest to your hood. The site prompts you to fill in three search fields instead of the usual one: What would you like to do? Where? and When? Some of the results are a bit shoddy, as it culls info from multiple sites across the Web, but it also seems like it could be quite helpful should you be looking for anything from ideas for the kids on a rainy... |

2009-09-23Tree TortureIf there’s one defining quality that sets me apart it’s that I’m horribly indecisive. Big decisions. Little decisions. It takes me awhile to make them all. My latest obsession is choosing a small tree for our front yard. (To give you an idea of how far behind I am, I had planned to choose a tree and plant it in the spring. Now it’s officially fall.) There’s a lot to consider here: shape, size, fruit, flower color, and, of course, I don’t want anything that’s too messy or has even the slightest chance of dying. The one benefit to taking so long to make a bloody decision is that I can now sign up for tree expert extraordinaire Michael Dirr’s lecture on all things tree when visits Blithewold on Monday. (He’s the guy who wrote The Manual... |

2009-09-21The October IssueIt's not Anna Wintour, but the upcoming issue of our magazine does have some fascinating stuff in it. The cover story is Finding Love in RI, a feature about finding, and keeping, someone to snuggle up with - even in the teeny tiny pool that Rhode Island is, or at least feels like most of the time. Part of the story involved sending out an online survey to hundreds of people, quite a few of whom actually bothered to take it. Thanks to all of them! They gave us some great info, more than we had space to print. So, in anticipation of the issue hitting news stands next week, here's the first of a few blogs spilling some of the goods we couldn't fit. And to everyone coming to Wednesdays's launch party at 1149 Restaurant, see you there! We were thrilled at the response, and sorry we can't fit... |

2009-09-18Trend Watch: Burger ManiaIt used to be safe to assume that BYOB meant bring your own booze. These days the acronym is just as likely to mean build-your-own burger. The gourmet burger trend first arrived locally about a year ago, when Todd Rizzo (of Rizzo Ford fame) left the car business to open Ozzi's Steakburger in Warwick. At Ozzi's (one of our Best of Rhode Island winners this year), diners can create customized sandwiches out of countless protein, cheese, sauce, topping and bun choices.Celebrity chef Bobby Flay rolled into town this summer to unveil Bobby's Burger Palace, his causal burger joint at Mohegan Sun. The menu is all about regional flavors: There's the Philadelphia Burger, topped with provolone, griddled onions and hot peppers, the Buffalo Burger, with hot sauce and blue cheese dressing and the LA... |

2009-09-17The September Issue in RII first heard about The September Issue almost two years ago when the fashion blogs were reporting that a documentary filmmaker had gained an all-access pass to the hallowed offices of Vogue magazine. Anna Wintour, the fashion magazine's elusive editrix, reportedly said no at first and then, to the glee of fashion fiends the world over, relented. I've been waiting in anticipation since then to see the movie, and the past couple weeks have been stalking the websites of smaller local theaters. Well my wait ended yesterday with the arrival of an email from Avon Cinema announcing that The September Issue opens there tomorrow. I'm dying to see how the most influential player in the fashion world works, and even a peek inside the Vogue... |

2009-09-16As the Pages TurnWe are 15 days away from the Big Move: Kinsley Ave to Allens Ave. I’ve been taking photos of the new office (under construction). It’s hard to believe that in just 2 weeks we will be moving in. In case you are interested, here is a look from the inside of the new building. I’ll be posting more photos leading up to the move, and of course of moving day itself and the post-move settling-in process, as it happens. As the pages turn, these are the days of our lives at Rhode Island Monthly. |
