2011-10-26Shedding Technology TrepidationDo Excel spreadsheets make you tense? We may have a solution. Shane Sher is a self-professed computer geek who spends much of his time helping people not to fear technology so much. During the nearly eight years he’s worked as a computer training specialist for Providence Public Library, Sher has taught more than 11,500 students things like the fine points of adding a column in Excel and how to sell their stuff on eBay. The library’s free computer classes have attracted people from a range of backgrounds: people living in shelters, looking to develop more job skills; people at the tip-top of their professions looking to brush up; moms looking to make some money on the side, Sher says. His youngest student was ten; the oldest, ninety-nine.... Posted at 10:20 AM in Food and Dining ridaily | Permalink

2011-10-25Two Weeks of Bookish ThrillWhen the sights and smells of autumn arrive, many recall their favorite fall traditions: the Scituate Art Festival, apple picking at Phantom Farms, Oktoberfest. But when I hear the first audible leaf crunching under-foot, I start daydreaming about the fall book sale at Rochambeau Library. A lover of all things literary, I look forward to spending some time on the Library’s ground floor, filling a bag with goodies to be devoured during the forthcoming weeks. It’s like trick-or-treating for the book dork! I’m enriched by these book sales, but I also kind of feel like a thief: Books can go for a dollar or less at the start of the sale and can plummet even more during the final days. When I leave the Rochambeau on the sale’s final day with a grocery bag... Posted at 03:12 PM in Food and Dining | Permalink

2011-10-21Clybourne Park at Trinity RepIf you’re looking for a happy ending, this is not the play for you. And if you’re easily offended, I recommend you either sit out Bruce Norris’ Pulitzer Prize winner or prepare yourself for an uncomfortable two hours. The opening scene, minimalist in a way only Trinity could be, is set in the midst of transition. Anne Scurria’s giggly and tender Bev and her gruff husband, Russ (Timothy Crowe) are in the process of moving out of Clybourne Park, eager to leave despondency behind in the white, middle-class neighborhood. As the couple banter back and forth, the viewer is not only attuned to what they’re saying but also the conversation they’re avoiding: Two years before, their only son, Kenneth committed suicide as a result of his bloody role in... 2011-10-20Creative Costumes for a Cause at the Runway Earth Fashion ShowLast year, my husband created a homemade Halloween costume that he thought would be the most creative anyone had ever seen. He bought a yellow hardhat with a light attached to the top. He found a pair of old jeans and a red T-shirt and he took them outside and drove over them with his Ford Escape. He burned coal on the grill and rubbed the ashes into the clothing and on his face, and put it all together to transform into a rescued Chilean coal miner. Much to his chagrin, we went out that night and everywhere we walked we saw dozens of men wearing hardhats and covered in soot. “I guess I wasn’t that creative,” he said, after which he chased after strangers who were his supposed mine-mates. “Hey brother, I’m glad to see you made it out... 2011-10-19Viola Davis Honored as a Top Woman in HollywoodViola Davis joined Naomi Watts, Freida Pinto, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jennifer Aniston and other marquee actresses Monday night at a party for Elle magazine’s Women in Hollywood issue. Davis, who grew up in Central Falls, is viewed as a favorite for awards for her recent performance in The Help. In 2010, she won the Tony award for Best Actress for her role in August Wilson’s play, Fences. Davis, rocking a metallic Lanvin dress and heels in the issue currently on newsstands, told Elle that “I didn’t get my SAG card until I was 30. But that’s how it works. You keep putting your work out there, and at some point, if you’re fortunate, if you’re lucky, if you’re blessed, it morphs into something. One role has led to another until...
