Ten Reasons to Visit the Princess Diana Exhibit at Foxwoods

“Diana, A Celebration,” will be on display at Foxwoods Resort Casino through Jan. 15, 2012, showcasing 150 objects on loan from the Althorp Estate, Diana’s family home in England. Here are ten reasons why it’s worth the short trip from Rhode Island to view the traveling exhibit. 1. Princess Diana’s wedding gown Lady Diana Frances Spencer married Charles, Prince of Wales, on July 29, 1981 and her gown will always be remembered. Her twenty-five-foot train is the longest in Royal history, and you can see it displayed behind a full glass enclosure that showcases the dress in all its sprawling glory. Accompanying the gown is a coordinating bridesmaid’s dress, as well as Diana’s shoes, earrings and parasol. 2. The funeral gallery I...

18 Down: Often-Impersonated Diva?

Brown University junior Aimee Lucido has gotten her second crossword puzzle, “Run to Las Vegas,” published in the New York Times this week, the university’s alumni magazine reports. Lucido describes herself on the Times’s crossword blog, Wordplay, as concentrating in computer science in literary arts. She got involved in the crossword puzzle world in the second half of her first year at Brown. She’s part of the university’s puzzle club, and her first effort was published in the paper during Brown Puzzle Week last year. She also writes crosswords for the Onion. Lucido also writes that she's a TA, part of the Madrigal Singers, and “in my spare time, I am writing a novel that tries desperately to be like an episode of Dr. Who...

Shop Local, Shop Happy

Shop Local, Shop Happy

Pre-Black Friday. Black Friday. Cyber Monday. Cyber Week. Last chance. Sale extended. Sheesh. I think I’ll pass on all the scary holiday sales for some real “last chance” gifts, made one-of-a-kind by local artisans and sold in a stress-free market atmosphere. There might be lots of people around, but I can (almost) guarantee you won’t be battling the masses to get your hands on a piece of pottery or hand-woven scarf. Here are some of our picks for this weekend:   Foundry Holiday Sale When: The opening reception will be held on Dec. 1, with refreshments and live music from 5–9 p.m. The sale will continue on Dec. 2–4 and Dec. 9–11, Fridays noon–8 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m.–6 p.m....

Skewering the Bar in Bristol

There are plenty of books featuring jokes about lawyers, from New Yorker cartoons to a title called Lowering the Bar: Lawyer Jokes and Legal Culture.   Doctors don’t get off much easier. But poking fun at these learned professions is nothing new, as an entertaining night of plays produced by Second Story Theatre shows. Staged at the Bristol Statehouse, two comedies from the seventeenth century—Moliere’s A Doctor in Spite of Himself and Jean Racine’s The Suitors—show that the French playwrights’ humor stands the test of time.    In A Doctor In Spite of Himself, a woodworker named Sganarelle (Jim Sullivan) gets into a fight with his wife, Martine (Liz Hallenbeck), who vows revenge. She tells two men that her husband is...

Cool Rainwear on a Soggy Day

A Providence company is looking to make dodging the raindrops chic. Cleverhood is manufacturing rain capes for urban travelers like bicyclists, featuring fabrics from plaid to corduroy. And they're made in the United States. "We set out to do something smart that would put good people to work," Susan Mocarski, the creator of Cleverhood, said in a news release. “There's so much creativity in Providence and this is the region that once lead the world in the garment industry. We're working to put it all together on our, admittedly, small scale. We figure we'll offer something good to people who take the 'rain-or-shine' approach to life--and small business." The line debuted at the Providence Bike Expo in October,...

Flush With Excitement

Toilet seats are back at Firehouse 13. Well, they've never gone away. But starting this week for the second year, the walls of the gallery will be lined with additional "artistically enhanced" toilet seats. Hosted by the Narragansett Bay Commission, the whimsical show is intended to bring attention to a serious issue: that 40 percent of the world's population does not have access to adequate sanitation, and a shocking number of young children die each year from related diseases, commission spokeswoman Jamie Samons says. The effort is in honor of World Toilet Day on Nov. 19, which the United Nations designated ten years ago to bring attention to the issue. Elementary, middle and high school students in Rhode Island--plus a few...
