2012-06-04A Few Good Men in BristolBefore The West Wing and The Social Network, there were a few good men. Aaron Sorkin was a struggling playwright in the 1980s when his sister Deborah, a Judge Advocate General for the Navy, provided him the inspiration for what would go on to become the Broadway play and Oscar-nominated film, A Few Good Men. His sister was headed to Guantanamo Bay to defend two Marines, who faced charges in the injury of a fellow Marine in an attack ordered by a superior officer. The play is now in production by 2nd Story Theatre, in performances held in the courtroom at the Bristol Statehouse and directed by University of Rhode Island professor Bryna Wortman. With explosive action, quick dialogue and compelling characters, the production feels as relevant today. The action opens in the... Posted at 12:57 PM in Theater ridaily | Permalink

2012-06-01Motherhood in All Its MajestyYou’ll function on less sleep than you ever thought you could. You’ll clean up things that you never thought you would. And you’ll trade in the convertible for a minivan. Welcome to Motherhood, an entertaining musical that’s playing at Trinity Repertory Company through July 1. Groups of women lined up outside the theater before the show and judging from the laughter throughout the production, it hit a chord. The action opens with Amy (Lisa Manuli), a perky blonde caressing her belly, three weeks from the due date of her first baby. She’s starry-eyed about the prospect of motherhood, singing “Nothing but the best for my baby,”—at least until her three friends, mothers themselves, arrive to give her a baby shower. Brooke... 2012-05-29The Calm Before the StormI think it's bizarre that so many Rhode Islanders pass on the opportunity to escape from reality in fifty minutes or less. And, more bizarre, so many others choose to visit Block Island exclusively on the Fourth of July. I will say that Independence Day on Block Island offers up some of the best people-watching of the year, whether you do your gawking at the parade or on Crescent Beach beneath the newly revamped Surf Hotel. In the midst of all the fun, there’s still a terrific island to explore. But the frat bros block out the view, and so do the groups of four bicycling side-by-side up Spring Street to visit the Southeast Lighthouse or the Mohegan Bluffs. That's more than a month away. Phew, there's still time. This weekend, the Block Island Chamber... Posted at 11:50 AM in ridaily Travel State of Mine | Permalink

2012-05-25Becoming Aware of the BubbleSitting in front of Wendy Richmond’s new piece “Alone in Public” in the RISD Museum is an experience both of watching and of being watched. Three black-and-white video projections surround the small seating area in the museum’s New Media Gallery. The videos were filmed by friends and acquaintances of the artist in public spaces, mostly coffee shops and libraries, using the cameras embedded in laptop computers. The projections capture their behaviors while they use their computers. Looking somewhat like a silent Skype staring contest, the videos draw attention to gestures such as the small eye movements created by reading, the touching of the face when thinking, the leaning back to sigh in frustration — gestures that are repeated and begin to overlap from... 2012-05-23Quitting the Day JobEric Sturtevant was thirty-two years old, managing a warehouse in Providence, feeling like he’d missed out on his dream. The Rhode Island College graduate had always loved to draw cartoons, but over the years, he’d gotten away from it. In 2006, he picked up his pencil again. He got a small gallery show in Providence and when he saw people buy some of his work, he started to think that maybe he could make a living as an artist. “In order for it to work, I felt I had to jump into it full-time,” Sturtevant says. Single at the time, he felt he had nothing to lose. He gave himself a deadline of December 31, left his job and cashed in his 401(K). “It was a scary day,” says Sturtevant, who now lives in Warwick. “I woke up with no job... 2012-05-22The Atlantic Cup Comes to TownCompetitors in the second-annual Atlantic Cup just rolled into Newport after the 231-nautical-mile coastal leg of the race, and they’re taking a breather in the City by the Sea before setting out for the two-day inshore race series this Memorial Day weekend. This three-part race is one of the premier Class 40 sailboat races in the world, with fifteen top-flight teams competing for one of the largest prize purses for sailing in the country ($30,000). It’s also the first carbon-neutral sailing race in the United States, using biodiesel and hydro generators to limit the use of fuel during the competition and swapping out single-use plastic bottles for canteens in all hospitality villages. Bodacious Dream, which is registered locally in Jamestown, came in at the head... Posted at 11:12 AM in Events ridaily State of Mine | Permalink
