Wine & Dine Sakonnet Style

There aren’t many local events that I’d blog about a month in advance, but this party toasting Sakonnet Vineyard’s 35th anniversary is sure to sell out (and I don’t want you to say I didn’t warn you!). “Elegance in the Afternoon” brings together a bunch of well-known chefs — Anne Quatrano chef/owner Bacchanalia, Floataway Cafe and Abbatoir in Atlanta; Jasper White, chef/owner of Summer Shack; Johanne Killeen and George Germon from Al Forno; Casey Riley from Newport Harbor Corporation; and Emily Luchetti, pastry chef at Farallon and Waterbar in San Francisco — who will each prepare a special dish, paired, of course, with Sakonnet wine in honor of the occasion. The event takes place on Sunday, June 27 (which I’m sure will be...

A Dress and a Date

This weather! So gorgeous! Two things to do:1. If you've been clearing clothes out of your closet to make room for summer stuff, you've probably spotted at least one work suit, dress or skirt that you love but that doesn't quite fit right. Give it away! We wrote about Peggy Porter Quinlan and her daughter, Melissa, in our May issue -- the mother and daughter duo just launched a Rhode Island branch of "Dress for Success," which provides professional attire and career development tools to disadvantaged women in Rhode Island. They need your good-condition office wear, and you need less stuff in your life to remind you of work. :)2. Wear one of the summer dresses you can now fit into your closet to: the Dress for Success Rhode Island dinner dance fundraiser at Quidnessett Country Club in...

Ahead In the Heat: Cool Theater

There's a lot to look forward to this summer for theater lovers. First off, Trinity Rep and the Gamm wrap up their regular seasons at the end of the month; there's a little more than a week left to see Syringa Tree and Rock 'n' Roll. I saw Syringa Tree this past weekend and it was marvelous. It's a rare chance to see Anna Scurria, Barbara Meek and Rachael Warren all share the stage in lead roles. They confidently and joyfully meet the challenge, as does young Brown/Trinity guest actress Tiffany Nichole Greene. This is the kind of performance Trinity does best, the kind of thing Trinity alone, of all the local theaters, can really pull off. It's a play about apartheid South Africa, with all four actresses taking more than one role to help bring us a rich story of friendship and sadness...

Shop for a Cause This Weekend

If you're looking for something to do this weekend, here's an event that would be extremely worthy of your time. Rhode Island nonprofit Children's Wishes, which grants wishes to local children with life-threatening illnesses, is holding a spring yard sale. The sale is taking place Saturday and Sunday, May 22 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day in the Children's Wishes parking lot at 757 Park Avenue in Cranston. Goods like clothing, home decor, books, toys, and furniture will be for sale, so you'll no doubt be able to find something that you want or need, especially when your money is going to such a good cause. For more information about the yard sale or Children's Wishes, call 228-7761 or visit cwishesri.com.

Pedal Power

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to ride your bike to work, tomorrow's the day to do it. Not only is the forecast looking fabulous (74 and sunny), but lots of festivities are going on as part of Providence's Bike-to-Work Day. A morning program from 6:30-9 a.m. at the World War I monument includes free breakfast and coffee, speakers, raffles and demos. Even more fun is scheduled in the afternoon: From 4-6:30, there will be more demos, plus food and drinks from United BBQ and a performance by the spirited What Cheer? Brigade. If that doesn't motivate you, how about this? The RIDOT estimates that average cost of maintaining a vehicle is $3,000 a year, versus just $50-$100 for a bike.

I'll See You At The Bar

So, the Bars and Nightlife issue landed in subscribers' mail boxes this morning (it'll be on news stands soon). I thought I'd celebrate by thanking the hundreds of you who participated in a survey over the winter that helped us gather information about Rhodey drinking habits. You pointed us toward some great bars: gorgeous reader favorites Local 121 and The Avery ended up on the cover and inside opener, respectively, and favorite bartenders like the Ivy's Rob Duncanson and Tini's Matt Arruda told us funny stories and pointed out hot new cocktail trends. You also told us about Pour Judgement in Newport, Club Soda on Block Island, and a whole lot of other awesome places to raise a glass. We rounded things out with stories about managing hangovers, grabbing late-night food, dancing and...

I Heart Frankie Valli

I was possibly one of the youngest people at Saturday's matinee of Jersey Boys, but I shouldn't have been. So fun! And I went a little reluctantly. First, it was gorgeously sunny on Saturday afternoon and I was tempted to linger on Westminster instead of heading into a dark theater. Second, I'm not a huge fan of musicals. I do like Guys and Dolls:Ā  "I've got the horse right here, his name is Paul Revere." Snappy! But that masked-phantom-on-a-gondola business, forget it. I am all set. However, it was my mother's birthday, and she really wanted to go, and I like the Four Seasons. (It's possible that I once choreographed a rollerskating routine to their 1966 hit "Working My Way Back to You" when I was a kid and that this routine consisted of me pointing and skating back and forth to...

Iron Chef Rhode Island?

I had the pleasure of being a fly on the wall at the Iron Chef-style challenge at The Miriam Hospital's Wine & Dine gala on Saturday.  John Elkhay of the Chow Fun Food Group (Luxe Burger Bar, Ten Prime Steak & Sushi, etc) battled Newport Restaurant Group chef Casey Riley (Castle Hill Inn, 22 Bowen's) for the title of top toque. For the night anyway. The competition was all in good fun, but with Food Network host Robert Irvine serving as master of ceremonies and judges including Sunny Anderson of the Food Network show "Cooking For Real" and Projo food editor Gail Ciampa, the dueling chefs clearly wanted to impress.Riley and Elkhay each got forty-five minutes to prepare an appetizer, salad and entree. And...
