Weekend Recommender

May 29, 2009 - 11:38 AM

Sometimes (especially in the depths of winter) it’s a struggle to find five recommendation-worthy happenings to highlight in our events e-newsletter, The Weekly Round-Up. Other times, there are so many great things going on that it’s tough to winnow it down to just five.

This week turned out to be jam-packed, so here are three more things worth checking out this weekend:

GreenStreets -  A Fashion Fundraiser: A fashion show featuring environmentally-friendly apparel designed and modeled by kids participating in the RiverzEdge Arts Project, a Woonsocket-based program that gives disadvantaged youth paid employment in the arts. There will also be raffles, music, a silent auction and an art exhibit.
May 30, 7-10 p.m., $45 in advance; $50 at the door, The Atrium at the Peerless Lofts, 150 Union St., Providence, 767-2100, riverzedgearts.org.

Save the Bay Ultimate Lighthouse Tour: On Saturday, Save the Bay hosts the first of six lighthouse tours it has lined up for this summer and fall. The Alletta Morris sets sail down the West Passage to Newport and returns home via the East Passage. On the trip, you’ll see more than a dozen lighthouses, including a stop on dry land for a tour of the Rose Island Lighthouse.
May 30, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., $85 members; $100 nonmembers, departs from the Save the Bay Center in Providence, 401-272-3540, x133, (reservations required), savebay.org.

AS220 Photo Lottery: Arts incubator AS220’s upcoming fundraiser for its darkroom and photo program goes something like this: Buy $100 ticket and you’re guaranteed to win one of the hundred photos on display at this one-evening showcase. If dropping at Ben Franklin sounds like too much to spare, just go to check out the art, which is free for the looking.
May 30, 6 p.m., Free admission, $100 lottery ticket, AS220, 115 Empire St., Providence, 831-9327, as220.org.
