Miss you Mex
It's Monday, which is always, always the day that I think I'd like to get a lunchtime huarache from the little Mexican take-out place tucked improbably in a parking lot near where I work. (A huarache is a long, oval shaped cornmeal flatbread topped with yummy stuff like refried beans, lettuce, tomato, cheese and cilantro. It's sort of the made-to-order Mexican equivalent of pizza, but more salady.)
It's also the day that El Taconazo is closed. None of Angelina's awesome spicy fresh salsa or green hot sauce for me. I've tried to find substitutes, and Sanchez Mexican Market on Atwells comes close. It's a small bodega but in the back are a couple of tables and a lunch counter. The menudo is outstanding. The tacos are pretty good too.
But if you want the best Mexican street food around (no fajitas or mole here, just lunch stuff, and for drinks only south of the border pop in a fridge) it's got to be El Taconazo. Check it out; if there's an address, I don't know it, but it's on Valley Street near Pleasant Valley Parkway, just about opposite the Alco redevelopment. Blink and you'll miss it - it's in a little shack painted the colors of the Mexican flag, leaning against a building in back of the parking lot where the Valley Street flea market happens. It looks totally unpermanent, but it perseveres. Perhaps it's the price - it's hard to spend more than $6. Perhaps it's the way the sun streams in the windows and the little space heater cranks away on cold days. Or perhaps it's that pico de gallo style salsa and the radishes and lime that are set out for diners. In any case, I can't wait for Monday to be over.
