Arctic Endeavor

Arctic Endeavor

Just when it starts to get properly nice here next month, Ellen Piangerelli will head north. Way north. In fact, to say she's headed for the frozen Arctic wastes is no exaggeration - she's headed for them and she's going to attempt to cross them, 320 miles of them, on foot.
She's one of the three-person Wired US team for the 2010 Polar Challenge, and she'll be wearing, eating, drinking and sheltering in whatever she can pull on a sled across the ice. She'll risk all sorts of danger - again, the hoariest of cliches fit. She'll risk unimaginable danger, and she'll push herself to her very limits.
We did a short story on Ellen last September that focused on her intense training (among other things, she's been pulling tires up and down Blackstone Boulevard to mimic the weight of the sled) and we're hoping to bring you another after the race, which runs mid-April to mid-May. But in the meantime, she needs financial support to help cover her race expenses. She's offering these cute T-shirts and hoodies for sale; email her to pre-order. For a peak inside her brain, check out her blog, The Frozen Banana (she has an interesting brain and a gift for humor, so it's a rewarding read).
If you're wondering where that frozen fruit motif comes from, it's a long story, but it involves a penniless cross-country Oldsmobile trip and costumed street theater. But that trip had nothing on this one. "I don't feel prepared," she told me today, "but I'm going to try my damndest."
Please help support her astounding endeavor.
