Learn to Garden in a Day

Mar 26, 2009 - 09:00 AM

It may be the sixth day of spring, but I’m here to tell you – and I know this firsthand -- that staring at those little green shoots poking up in your flower beds won’t make them grow any faster, no matter how hard you look at them.

What will cure that early-spring-garden lust, however, is URI's GreenShare Garden School Day on April 4th  at the Roger Williams Botanical Center. Coordinator Sejal Lanterman calls it, “a six-week gardening course all crammed into one day.”

The workshops are geared to amateurs and focus on starting seeds, soil testing (free!), growing container vegetables, lawn care, and one of the most popular sessions: worm composting. Star attractions, the Worm Ladies of Charlestown, will be selling Red Wigglers (turns out they’re excellent composters) and answering such pesky questions as: how much should worms be fed, and what to do if their bin is too wet?

Exhibitors from the New England Carnivorous Plant Society, the Rhode Island Orchid Society, the Rhode Island Wild Plant Society, among others, will also be on hand. Early registration ($20 half-day; $30 full day), ends tomorrow but for just $5 more, you can register on the actual day. Don’t forget to bring a lunch.

This event is NOT limited to those who pre-register for classes. If you can't commit to a half or full day of classes, but you do have some gardening questions you can't seem to find the answers for, you can simply walk-in to the Botanical Center (of course, regular Botanical Center admission fees will apply: $3 for ages 13+, $1 for ages 6-12 and free for kids age 5 and under)and speak to one of the Botanical Center's Partner Groups (listed above as "exhibitors").

These folks are experts in their horticultural fields and can certainly help to answer that tough qustin you may have....besides the societies listed above, URI Master Gardeners will be on hand as will the RI Bonsai Society, RI Begonia Society, URI Master Composters and Recyclers, and the RI Rose Society. There will be a fun activity for kids and as mentioned previously, you can bring in a sample of your soil to have its pH tested.

The Botanical Center will open at 9AM that day and close by 4PM.
