StyleWeek Resort Looks Debut in Newport

Jul 5, 2012 - 12:46 PM

StyleWeek isn’t just a biannual event anymore. Last Saturday, the team partnered up with Child and Family Services of Newport for Au Courant, a fashion showcase at Salve Regina University’s Ochre Court that benefitted the social service provider. Northeast designers sent pieces from their resort collections down the runway, and then they auctioned off one-of-a-kind items to support Child and Family's programs.

The featured designers included Denise Hajjar, Avni Trivedy, Joseph Aaron Segal, Jessica Abernethy, Jonathan Joseph Peters and Sarah Prost. Handbag designers Kent Stetson and Marcela Calvet were also on hand to show off their beautiful handmade purses and clutches for purchase. A change from past StyleWeek shows, some designers took looks straight from the runway and offered them up for sale to partygoers. If they liked what they saw on the catwalk, they could buy the designs on the spot. If you are interested in purchasing clothing from these designers, simply go to their websites below for more information and ordering details.

Here are some of my favorite looks from each collection. Photos by Todd Lee Photography.

Denise Hajjar

Boston designer Denise Hajjar featured a whimsical 50's-style cocktail dress with big and bold polka dots, as well as long chartreuse and lilac evening gowns with jeweled necklaces--or should we say backlaces?--gracing the backs of models. denisehajjar.com

Avni Trivedi

Boston-based designer Avni Trivedi was born in India, and she constructs flowing feminine dresses using all-natural fabrics that are handmade by artisans in India. avnifashion.com

Joseph Aaron Segal

This designer's futuristic looks feature unusual textiles and surprising silhouettes. The color combos in this collection include rust orange paired with turquoise and metallic gold, and sometimes accented by neutral floral prints. worldofjas.com

Jessica Abernethy

Rhode Island-based designer Jessica Abernethy's highly wearable collection highlights bold, solid colors in deep green, blue, orange and red paired with stripes, floral and polka dot patterns. jessabernethy.com

Jonathan Joseph Peters

JJP's resort collection features pastel lace accented by vintage paisley prints and sometimes a jolt of tangerine. My favorite piece is the navy belted jacket/dress with gold embellishment and a cowl neckline. jonathanjosephpeters.com

Yellow Clover by Sarah Prost

Sarah Prost's flirty dresses feature soft colors and fabrics that you want to wear every day. You can easily take her looks from day to night and from work to play, and the hand-detailing on each piece exhibits a quality in craftsmanship that makes each garment timeless and unique. yellow-clover.com

Next week, for the first time, the group will also launch StyleWeek Resort in South Beach, Miami. Emerging designers from the Northeast (including Peters and Abernethy) and Florida will present their looks July 10-14 with a launch party at the Alessandra Gold Concept Store on Tues. July 10, followed by three nights of runway shows (Wed.-Fri.) at The Temple House, and on Sat. July 14, there will be a closing shopping event and wrap party at the Alessandra Gold Concept Store.
