The Reluctant Pinup

The Reluctant Pinup

Before today, I’ve never owned a tube of red lipstick. Or black eyeliner or blush, for that matter. My mother is among those natural beauties that require just a kiss from the sun to sparkle and glow. So I’m going to deflect a little of the blame onto her for my bemused, red-faced, hands-thrown-in-the-air approach to the art of makeup. Thanks, mom. But I love femininity: flirty jewels, flowing dresses and retro threads that never, ever go out of style. So when the lovely LuLu Locks of Providence Pinup invited me for a mini session at her brand new salon, I couldn’t say no. Dress-up has always been my favorite game, even long into adulthood. In the week before my session, I daydream about playing in the back room at LuLu’s Suite Tart salon, running my...

Folk Fest Chats: Q&A with Brown Bird

Folk Fest Chats: Q&A with Brown Bird

MorganEve Swain and David Lamb, the multitalented local musicians of Brown Bird, took a few minutes to chat about their second Newport Folk Festival performance, new music, touring and more.   How did this year at the Newport Folk Festival compare to your first appearance last year? David Lamb: It was a total letdown. Just kidding. It was awesome. Obviously we were on the bigger stage. Last year we were on the harbor stage, which was great. It has its own intimate feel, and that was really exciting and fun. This one was a totally different experience. It was our first time on a jumbotron, and that was cool. It feels like you’re in one of those old music concert movies of like Pink Floyd or something. The crowd was also really awesome this year. I have no...

The 2012 Newport Folk Festival, Saturday Edition

The 2012 Newport Folk Festival, Saturday Edition

Some of the loveliest Newport Folk Festival moments happen just before a band starts a set, when the musician up front professes sincere gratitude for being a part of the day. Performers, famous or new to the scene, seem to step back, admire the crowd and bask in the idea that they’re part of history in the making. Local duo MorganEve Swain and David Lamb of Brown Bird were no different. Swain told the crowd how excited she was to be performing on the main stage at Fort Adams, and said she was mildly distracted by the stage’s views of the sparkling Newport Harbor. Brown Bird set the right tone for a day filled with gracious musical hosts, comedic crowd interaction and once-in-a-lifetime performances. The duo played stomping favorites off their 2011 release, Salt...

Movies Under the Stars

Movies Under the Stars

Tucked off a busy four-lane highway and surrounded by trees, you can travel back in time and spend a sticky summer night watching a movie under the stars. I headed to North Smithfield recently with a friend to check out the Rustic Tri Vue Drive-In. There’s a special exit lane off Route 146 into accommodate the carloads of people who’ve flocked there since 1951. A sign with a big yellow arrow dotted with blinking lightbulbs directs moviegoers off the road and at about twenty minutes to eight on a recent Saturday night, a line of minivans and trucks waited to get in to see double features of first-run movies. The theater wasn’t always so family-friendly. For a time, the theater featured X-rated movies, angering town officials, according to Providence...

Newport Folk Fest is Almost Here!

Newport Folk Fest is Almost Here!

I can’t contain it. I’m counting down the hours (roughly ninety-five) until gates sweep over dewy grass at Fort Adams State Park and open up to a world of simple, sunny music. I’m not the only one who harbors a sweet fondness for the Newport Folk Festival. Tickets sold at a record speed this year, with all one- and two-day weekend passes in eager hands more than three months in advance. The festival board was kind enough to book a Friday night show with Wilco, Blitzen Trapper and Megafaun, and a limited supply of tickets can be found here. But have no fear, ticketless fans: We’ll be providing daily weekend coverage from the front lines, with photos, interviews and short performance reviews. It’ll sort of feel like you were there, swaying to the...
